Council Considering Cannabis Business District

Antioch could be the next Bay Area city to open its doors to the marijuana industry.

At next week's meeting, the city council will discuss creating a cannabis business district along the city's waterfront. The proposal, approved by the planning commission on May 3, includes the northeast end of the city along the San Joaquin River as well as a smaller area along Verne Roberts Circle near the Pittsburg border.

California voters legalized marijuana for recreational use two years ago with the passage of Proposition 64, although retail sales did not happen until this year. City leaders have not yet decided what types of cannabis businesses to allow within the city.

Fewer than one in three California cities allow cannabis businesses and fewer than 20 percent allow medical marijuana dispensaries, according to a recent study by The Cannifornian. Antioch currently does not allow medical marijuana deliveries.
